What is Otology or Neurotology?

Otology is a field of medicine that focuses on the study of the ear and its related diseases and treatments. Neurotology is a related field of medicine that includes the study of the inner ear, including the hearing and balance organs, as well as diseases of the lateral skull base.

Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is a specialty that is focused on the care of patients with diseases of the ear, nose, throat and related head and neck structures. Doctors practicing this specialty, otolaryngologists, can diagnose and treat many of the common problems in these areas, and are commonly referred to as ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctors. To become an otolaryngologist, a physician completes a five-year residency training program and must pass a written and oral examination provided by the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Although general otolaryngologists care for simple problems related to the ear, many of the diseases of the ear and skull base can be complex, including advanced surgical treatments. Neurotology is a subspecialty of otolaryngology that is reserved for physicians with special expertise in the management of diseases of the inner ear, temporal bone and skull base. This requires an additional two years of subspecialty practice and training in a fully accredited program as well as an additional examination for board certification.

Dr. Jethanamest is a fellowship-trained surgeon and is board-certified in Otolaryngology as well as the subspecialty of Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery. He has published numerous research articles and continues to apply a unique background in computer science to innovative translational research in the field of cochlear implantation. His clinical focus includes hearing loss, cochlear implants, chronic ear disease, acoustic neuromas, vestibular disorders and skull base tumors.
